NZ Pool Fencing Requirements — What You Need to Know
Pool fencing in New Zealand is governed by the Building Act 2004, the Fencing of Swimming Pools Act 1987 (now incorporated into the Building Act), and the NZ Building Code Clause F9. Here are the key requirements.
Minimum height
1200mm — measured on the pool side of the fence.
Climbing resistance
No horizontal rails or footholds within the fence that would assist climbing. The fence must not be climbable by a 5-year-old child.
Gap restrictions
No opening greater than 100mm in any direction. Vertical bars must be spaced no more than 100mm apart.
Gate requirements
All gates must be self-closing and self-latching. Latches must be on the pool side and at least 1500mm above ground, or be of a type that cannot be opened by a child.
Setback
The pool fencing must be at least 1000mm from the pool edge (to avoid the fence being used as a launch point).
Inspection
Pool fencing must be inspected by your local council. Councils inspect at least every 3 years.
