How to Maintain Your Aluminium Fence
Aluminium fencing is low maintenance, but a simple annual routine will keep it looking new and extend the powder coat life significantly.
Annual wash-down
Wash down with fresh water and a mild detergent at least once a year — more frequently in coastal or urban environments. This removes salt, grime, and pollutants that degrade the powder coat over time.
After storms
After any storm or high-salt event, rinse with fresh water as soon as possible. Salt left on the surface is the primary cause of powder coat degradation in coastal areas.
Powder coat inspection
Inspect powder coat annually for chips or scratches. Touch up with colour-matched touch-up paint immediately to prevent moisture ingress and corrosion at the aluminium surface.
Fixings check
Check fixings annually — tighten any loose screws. Replace any corroded fixings immediately with stainless equivalents. This is particularly important in coastal zones.
Post base maintenance
Clear any debris, soil, or organic material from the base of posts. Moisture trapped against the post base can cause premature corrosion even on aluminium.
Automated gates
For automated gates: lubricate hinges, wheels, and drive racks annually with a dry lubricant or silicone spray. Check safety edges and photocells monthly to ensure they are functioning correctly.
