How Long Does Aluminium Fencing Last in New Zealand?

Quality aluminium fencing in New Zealand has an expected lifespan of 40–50 years or more. Here are the key factors that affect how long your fence will last.

Powder coat quality

A 75-micron coat with a coastal-rated finish will outlast a standard 60-micron spec by 10+ years in salty environments. Specify Interpon D2525 or equivalent for the best coastal performance.

Alloy grade

Marine-grade 6005-T5 or 6061-T6 perform significantly better than lower-grade extrusions, particularly in coastal and high-UV environments.

Fixing system

316-grade stainless fixings are essential in coastal zones. Standard zinc-plated fixings will fail long before the aluminium does, causing staining and structural problems.

Maintenance

A wash with fresh water every 6–12 months (especially after storms) will significantly extend powder coat life in coastal and urban areas. This is the single most effective maintenance action you can take.

Comparison with other materials

Compared with timber (12–25 years), steel (15–30 years with maintenance), and PVC (20–30 years), aluminium fencing offers the best overall lifespan with the lowest maintenance requirement.
